SPECIAL AFGHANISTAN
Documentary
Afghanistan is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Western, Central, and Southern Asia. It is bordered by Pakistan to the south and east, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to the north. There is a short border with China to the far northeast via the Wakhan corridor, but in extremely inaccessible terrain.
During of the harshest winter that Afghanistan had experienced, a Television crew went there to shoot a documentary for NBC, in the middle of the nine-year conflict involving Soviet forces supporting the Marxist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (P.D.P) against the Mujahideen. The TV crew entered Afghanistan clandestinely through Peshawar and the Khyber pass, the strategic mountain pass which links Pakistan and Afghanistan; and walked for 5 days with the help of local guides and mules carrying equipment and supplies, trying not to be spotted by the Soviet forces and not to be blown off by land mines. The 5 days of a highly dangerous trekking, were recorded until the crew reached the Panjshir Valley and the final objective: a meeting and an interview with the legendary Commandant Ahmad Shah Massoud. The “Lion of Panjshir”.
